here is the User Menu located at the top of your screen.

Bell: Notifications. When you increase in rank, get a new badge or a few other options, you will see a number over this icon.

Envelope: When you get a message from an Admin or another member, you will get notification here.

Flag: You will not see this is for Admins only and shows when a user has filed a report on an item on the forums. For instance, someone posts an image that is NSFW and it gets reported.

Page: Click this one to get all your unread mail. If you wish tot mark everything read on the forums, click on your name and then select "Mark all content as read".
