Does the exhaust from a bathroom or kitchen vent need to be insulated. Per R403.3.1?351513795_R-6requirement.thumb.jpg.cbd2a7e331b42dfda2c41626f990e479.jpg303.5.1. Opening protection shall be in accordance with Section R303.6

No.ย  They are for exhaust only.ย  Only heated or cooled air ducts need to be insulated.

As a retired HVAC contractor and Mechanical inspector, there are times that those ducts need to be insulated.ย  if they form condensation, they will need to be insulated.ย  I have seen cases where the kitchen hood will literally rain on top of the range during cold weather.
